August, 2008 (forthcoming in Journal of Business and Economic Statistics) ABSTRACT This paper considers testing the null hypothesis that a times series is uncorrelated when the time series is uncorrelated but statistically dependent. This case is of interest in economic and finance applications. The GARCH (1, 1) model is a leading example of a model that generates serially uncorrelated but statistically dependent data. The tests of serial correlation introduced by Andrews and Ploberger (1996, hereafter AP) are generalized for the purpose of testing the null. The rationale for generalizing the AP tests is that they have attractive properties for case for which they were originally designed: They are consistent against all non-white noise alternatives and have good all-round power against nonseasonal alternatives compared to several widely used tests in the literature. These properties are inherited by the generalized AP tests.

Local Power of Andrews and Ploberger Tests Against Nearly Integrated, Nearly White Noise Process∗

We find that the Andrews and Ploberger’s (1996) tests have unit local power against the nearly integrated, nearly white noise process (ref. Nabeya and Perron (1994)). Therefore, compared with the stationary local alternatives, higher power is expected when testing against such process. Monte Carlo simulation confirms our results. We apply the tests to monthly SP500 stock returns and strongly re...

Weighted Average Power Similar Tests for Structural Change for the Gaussian Linear Regression Model

The average exponential tests for structural change of Andrews and Ploberger (Econometrica, 62, 1994) and Andrews, Lee and Ploberger (Journal of Econometrics 70, 1996) and modifications thereof maximize a weighted average power which incorporates specific weighting functions in order to make the resulting test statistics simple. Generalizations of these tests involve the numerical evaluation of...

Market Efficiency of Asean Stock Markets

In this paper, we examine the stock market efficiency of the members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). We use the conventional individual variance ratio tests like the Lo and MacKinlay (1988) test, Choi (1999) test, Wright (2000) test and Chen and Deo (2006)) test to check for the efficient market hypothesis in these markets. We also perform the spectral shape test of Durl...

A Complete Class of Tests when the Likelihood is Locally Asymptotically Quadratic

This paper constructs an asymptotically complete class of tests (i.e. for a test not within this class one can ...nd a test within the class that has better or equal asymptotical powerfunction) for testing one parametric restriction when the likelihoodfunction can asymptotically be approximated by a quadratic function: The coe¢cients of this quadratic form may be random variables, so that our r...
